Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, recently unveiled detailed expansion plans for Colossus 2, the AI computing cluster under xAI, via the X platform. According to the timeline he shared, the supercomputer facility located in Memphis, U.S., could more than double its count of NVIDIA chips by the end of this year.

Musk stated that Colossus 2 currently hosts 110,000 NVIDIA GB200 chips and 440,000 GB300 chips, totalling approximately 550,000 GPUs. Under the plan, an additional 220,000 GB300 chips will go live next week, with another 220,000 scheduled for November. He added that with "a bit of luck", a further 220,000 chips may come online in late December.

If all the aforementioned plans are implemented on schedule, Colossus 2 will house roughly 1.21 million NVIDIA chips, representing an increase of around 120% from its current scale.

Musk also revealed that chips are being added in batches of 110,000 units primarily due to limitations on the quantity of fiber optic cables for central switches.

Notably, xAI previously announced plans to equip the Memphis facility with one million NVIDIA GPUs by 2026. The newly released timeline shows this target is being accelerated. Analysts estimate the total value of chips in Colossus 2 could exceed USD 50 billion, with the two data centres delivering more than 2 gigawatts of computing power.

At present, Musk has not clarified whether Colossus 2 has sufficient power and infrastructure capacity to support full operation of all these newly added chips.
