AWS Responds to Rumors of Layoffs in Greater China: Reports Are Grossly Inaccurate; AWS Continues Active Talent Recruitment in China

2025-09-15

Today, there were reports claiming that Amazon Web Services (AWS) plans to lay off employees in its Greater China region, which may involve more than 20% of its staff there.

According to a report by China Business News, an AWS spokesperson stated in response that the relevant reports are grossly inaccurate, and AWS continues to actively recruit talents in China.

It is worth noting that Wang Minjie, former Chief Applied Scientist of AWS Shanghai AI Lab, revealed in July this year that the AWS Shanghai AI Lab was officially disbanded. This lab was also AWS's last overseas research institute. An Amazon spokesperson confirmed the veracity of this news, describing it as a "difficult decision," and stated that the company would fully support the smooth transition of the affected employees.

Andy Jassy, CEO of Amazon, mentioned in June this year that the expansion of generative AI applications will bring structural changes to the enterprise's human resource management. While some positions will be cut, new positions will be added in other areas; however, the overall number of employees will enter a downward trend.

According to reports from two major foreign media outlets, Reuters and Bloomberg, Amazon is implementing a human resource restructuring plan. Multiple departments under its cloud computing division AWS have experienced a round of layoffs, affecting at least hundreds of positions.
