Diodes Incorporated (Nasdaq: DIOD) announced the launch of its new matrix LED driver, the AL5958Q, which complies with automotive specifications*. Equipped with 48-channel constant current sources and supporting up to 32 scan groups, this device transforms automotive dynamic lighting, enhancing safety, personalization, and aesthetics for new-generation automotive platforms.

The AL5958Q is particularly well-suited for narrow-pixel mini-LED and micro-LED displays. These two types of displays require multiple sets of RGB LEDs to enable animated dynamic lighting for displaying data and information. Its applications include central information displays, instrument cluster displays, head-up displays (HUDs), grille and emblem lights, vehicle body LED panels, interior lighting, and taillights.
The AL5958Q integrates intelligent matrix display command functions, which significantly reduce the processing load on the local microcontroller. These functions include: automatic insertion of black frames to minimize blurring caused by scan switching; reduction of afterimages on preceding and subsequent scan lines to eliminate the "ghosting" effect induced by parasitic capacitance; and suppression of the "caterpillar" effect caused by short-circuited LEDs. Additionally, it features open-circuit LED fault lines, staggered current output delay (to greatly reduce inrush current), grayscale enhancement (also known as low-brightness uniformity compensation), grayscale clock (GCK) monitoring timer, and a power-saving sleep mode.
The AL5958Q’s differentiated capabilities are highlighted by its built-in 16 sets of N-MOSFET switches and scan control functions, supporting both static and dynamic systems. With a scan range of 0 to 32 groups and flexible scan sequencing, it enables animated lighting displays. For large-scale applications, multiple AL5958Q devices can be configured into an unlimited daisy chain, supporting the construction of large-scale and complex RGB displays while achieving local dimming.
Supporting 16-bit resolution dimming and RGB compatibility, the AL5958Q delivers high-precision brightness control and color mixing. The current output for each color group can be set via three external current-sensing resistors or programmed through three sets of 6-bit global current control registers. Moreover, its unique Multi-Pulse Density Modulation (M-PDM) technology increases the refresh rate of dynamic scan systems without raising the grayscale clock (GCK) frequency, thereby effectively reducing EMI interference caused by high clock frequencies.
The AL5958Q incorporates comprehensive advanced diagnostic functions and protection mechanisms to provide essential monitoring capabilities, including: an error flag register for marking LED open/short circuits (reading out each channel with open/short detection enabled), Under-Voltage Lockout (UVLO) protection, and a monitoring timer.
Operating within a temperature range of -40°C to +125°C, the AL5958Q adopts a wettable flank W-QFN9090-76/SWP (Type A1) package, meeting the requirements of the automotive market.
A standard version, the AL5958, is also available for industrial and commercial applications.
