Intel Collaborates with Amazon Web Services to Build a New Engine for Cloud Services

2025-08-25

Intel® Xeon® 6 Performance Core Processors now power the newly launched Amazon EC2 R8i and R8i-flex instances on Amazon Web Services (AWS). Compared with other cloud instances based on Intel processors, these two new instances deliver superior performance and faster memory bandwidth to users.

The official release of Amazon’s 8th - generation EC2 instances based on Intel Xeon 6 Processors brings exceptional performance and higher memory bandwidth to customers in the cloud.

These new instances are not only the fruitful result of the long - term in - depth cooperation between Intel and AWS, but also fully demonstrate that the two parties are joining hands to provide chip technology innovation and closely coordinated software optimization for customers seeking scalable, cost - effective, and high - performance cloud infrastructure.

Ronak Singhal, Senior Fellow at Intel, said: “The launch of the 8th - generation EC2 instances based on Intel Xeon 6 marks a new milestone in the cooperation between Intel and AWS. The infrastructure jointly built by the two parties can accelerate AI computing, improve memory performance, and simplify the deployment process, helping customers efficiently gain insights and achieve better return on investment.”

As enterprises increasingly rely on real - time data processing, AI, and high - compliance workloads, the demand for cloud infrastructure that combines versatility and outstanding performance has become more urgent. The Intel Xeon 6 Processor provides a flexible general - purpose computing platform for this purpose. It minimizes reliance on dedicated accelerators, thereby greatly simplifying the deployment and management of various application scenarios.

Nishant Mehta, Vice President of AWS EC2 Product Management, stated: “Customers are in urgent need of infrastructure that can meet the requirements of their extremely demanding workloads. Through cooperation with Intel, the new Amazon EC2 R8i and R8i - flex instances have achieved a breakthrough: compared with previous generations, the memory bandwidth has increased by 2.5 times, and the cost - effectiveness has improved by 15%. This innovation not only significantly enhances performance, but also helps customers reduce costs while maximizing business value.”

From processor microarchitecture and firmware tuning to hypervisor tuning, virtualization, and software frameworks, Intel provides optimizations for every layer of the stack. This tight integration enables the Xeon 6 Processors deployed in AWS’s global infrastructure to fully unlock their value and deliver optimized performance experiences to a wide range of cloud customers.

This collaboration highlights the important value of Intel as a foundational technology provider for AWS and the cloud ecosystem, and plays a key role in helping developers, data researchers, and IT leaders efficiently carry out innovation, scaling, and deployment.

The advantages of the new Xeon 6 - based instances include:

High - density computing: The Xeon 6 adopts an optimized core architecture, increasing the number of cores and improving the pipeline design, thereby delivering more powerful performance and better thread scalability. This enables AWS to provide larger - sized instances (such as 96xlarge) and higher computing density for customers’ diverse workloads.

Faster DDR5 support: With DDR5 memory speeds of up to 7200 MT/s, the new instances offer higher memory bandwidth and lower latency, making them ideal for analytics, machine learning (ML), and in - memory databases.

Built - in AI acceleration: Integrated with Intel® Advanced Matrix Extensions (AMX), it can achieve up to 2x faster AI inference and machine learning performance, reducing the need for external accelerators and simplifying deployment.

Intel® QuickAssist Technology (QAT): Supports hardware - accelerated encryption and compression, freeing up CPU resources and improving the performance of security - sensitive and regulated workloads in industries such as finance, healthcare, and the public sector.

A number of industry - leading enterprises, including Netflix and CrowdStrike, have taken the lead in trialing the Xeon 6 - based instances to support their AI - driven and cloud - native applications. They stated that the new cloud instances have achieved significant improvements in computing throughput, AI performance, and infrastructure efficiency.
